I hardly ever write reviews, but I should because I use other people’s reviews to make decisions. The first thing you should know is that I’ve never mowed a lawn in my life. I am a single mother and I just bought my first house last October (it is now June). I wanted to buy a mower and used the reviews on this site as well as friends’ general recommendations to buy this one – the Black and Decker MM875.
This mower is great for a novice as it is almost completely assembled in the box. The only thing you have to do is remove the mulcher thing, attach the bag, turn the screws (4) to adjust the height of the bar (to push it) and plug it in and go! My only issue was with the cord. I bought the recommended size and amp cord for it, but I didn’t realize that I needed an adapter to actually plug it into the mower itself. The place to plug it into the mower is a 2-prong, meanwhile every extension cord I saw for mowers including the one I bought is a three-prong. I didn’t see anything in the instructions that would have told me this. So I had to return to the store to get an adapter.
Also, you will need 2 adapters if you don’t have a three-prong outlet in your home to plug the other end into. I’m sure that most people probably have adapters, but again, my first home and first time mowing so I have nothing! Other than that, I had no problems whatsoever. I was a little wary as some reviewers said they had issues with attaching the bag and others said they had to empty the bag too many times, but I have a medium sized lawn, probably about 80 feet long and 40 feet wide or so and I had no problems with either attaching the bag (I thought my 9-yr old son could have done it) or with emptying it. The height-adjustment thing is great! One push of it and you adjust all 4 wheels! My lawn was pretty high by the time I got the mower so I had to go over it three times at three different height adjustments and it looked great when I was done.
Again – this is a person who has never used a lawnmower in her life! I did have to empty the bag maybe about 5 times (but that’s going over the lawn three times). I thought that was completely acceptable given my alternative of having to pick up the clippings myself – forget that! I am very happy with the mower. It did slow down once, but I realized that I had the height too low and it was trying to cut the dirt! So I just made it a little bit higher and it was fine. When I was done with it, I just wiped out the underside with a piece of newspaper as recommended, lowered the handlebar and stored it. Piece of cake! I would highly recommend this mower, especially for women or for anyone who is not good with mechanical things because this is for you. Oh – I didn’t have any problems with the cord either. It just seems common sense not to run it over and to start near where you plugged it in and work your way away from there. I didn’t feel at all that the cord was a pain.
I thought having to deal with gasoline and oil would have been more of a pain which is why I went with the electrical one. I will have to write another review as I use it more often to see how it does long-term, but for now I’m happy! I also bought a Black and Decker weed wacker but haven’t tried to use it yet. I will review that as well once I do!
